Last-minute Sri Lanka holidays are often possible, because a private car and driver can usually be arranged at short notice. The harder parts are peak-week hotels, popular train seats and festival nights. Apply for your ETA online before you fly, stay flexible on the route, and follow the coast that suits your travel month.

Entry at short notice
Checked 4 November 2026You need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before arriving. Nationals of 40 countries currently receive the tourist ETA free. Apply only on the official ETA website, and do it as soon as your flights are booked.
Choosing a route quickly
- December to March: culture inland, then the south or west coast.
- May to September: the Cultural Triangle and the east coast.
- October, November and April: inland touring with a flexible beach stay.

Not reliably. Shoulder months can have good hotel rates at short notice, but peak weeks usually cost more the closer you get. The bigger savings come from route choices and travel dates.
How quickly can I get a Sri Lanka ETA?
