Many of the best things to do in Sri Lanka are free. Walk the ramparts of Galle Fort, watch sunset on Galle Face Green in Colombo, and stroll around Kandy Lake. You can also climb Little Adam’s Peak near Ella, watch trains cross the Nine Arch Bridge, and join a Poya-day temple visit. Most beaches have no entry fee.

Free festivals and rituals

  • Vesak: lanterns, pandals and free food stalls in May. In 2027 it falls on 19 May. See our Vesak guide.
  • Poya days: every full moon, temples fill with devotees in white.
  • Temple processions: watching a perahera from the street is free.

Dates come from the Central Bank of Sri Lanka’s 2027 holiday list.

Local planning noteSome temples ask for a small donation or charge for shoe-keeping. Carry small notes. Dress modestly, as you would at any working temple.

Read our temple etiquette guide before visiting temples. More value guides are in Sri Lanka holiday deals.
