Sri Lanka 7-Day Itinerary: Two Realistic Routes for One Week

A 7-day Sri Lanka itinerary works best with three bases: Sigiriya for ancient sites, Kandy for culture, then either Ella for tea country or the coast for a short beach finish. Trying to fit in culture, hills, safari and beaches in one week means a long drive almost every day.

Which 7-day route should you choose?

Both versions share the first four days in the Cultural Triangle and Kandy. The choice is how you spend the last three.

Main trade-offA long drive back to the airport on the last dayNo tea country or hill-country train
Best monthsJanuary to April for clearer hill weatherDecember to March for the west coast

Seasonal guidance from the official Sri Lanka Tourism climate guide (checked 6 October 2026) places the southwest coast’s peak season in December to February. Between May and September, consider replacing the coast with Trincomalee on the east coast.

Days 1–4: Cultural Triangle and Kandy

AirportSigiriyaKandyElla or coast
Day 1

Arrive and drive to Sigiriya

Leave Bandaranaike International Airport for the Sigiriya or Habarana area. Stop at the Dambulla cave temple on the way if you land early. After a late or overnight flight, sleep near the airport instead and shift the route by one night.

Day 2

Sigiriya and a village afternoon

Climb Sigiriya Rock early, before the heat and the queues build. Spend the afternoon resting or on a village walk. Read our Sigiriya climbing tips before you go.

Day 3

Polonnaruwa or an elephant safari

Choose Polonnaruwa’s ancient city in the morning, or a jeep safari in Minneriya or Kaudulla in the afternoon. Doing both is possible but makes a long, hot day for children.

Day 4

Drive to Kandy

Travel south to Kandy, with an optional spice-garden stop near Matale. Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in the evening. Cover your shoulders and knees, and remove shoes and hats inside.

Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa, Dambulla and Kandy are all UNESCO World Heritage properties. That density is why one week can still feel full without extra driving.

Days 5–7: the culture and hills version

Day 5

Train from Kandy to Ella

Take the morning hill-country train through the tea estates. Your driver takes the luggage by road and meets you in Ella. Reserve seats through Sri Lanka Railways online reservations, and see our train-ticket guide.

Day 6

Ella walks

Walk Little Adam’s Peak early, then visit the Nine Arch Bridge. Fitter walkers can try Ella Rock instead. Keep the afternoon free for tea, a cooking class or rest.

Day 7

Return to the airport

The drive from Ella to the airport takes most of a day. It only works for an evening or late-night flight. For an earlier flight, cut Ella to one night and add a final night near the airport.

Days 5–7: the culture and coast version

Day 5

Kandy morning, then the west coast

See the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya in the morning. Then drive to Bentota for two nights, or to Negombo if you want to stay close to the airport.

Day 6

Beach day

Rest, swim where lifeguards or hotel staff confirm conditions, or take a river boat trip. Leave this day unplanned to recover before the flight.

Day 7

Depart

Transfer to the airport with plenty of time for check-in. The coast version gives the easiest final day of the two.

What to leave out of a one-week trip

Leave these for a longer trip rather than squeezing them in:

  • Yala or Udawalawe and the south coast together. They add a long drive in each direction. A 14-day route fits them properly.
  • Jaffna and the north. The drive is long enough to deserve its own three or four days.
  • Adam’s Peak. The night climb needs a rest day before and after it.
  • A new hotel every night. It saves no time once you count check-ins and packing.

If you have ten days, our 10-day itinerary combines both endings. For the full planning process, start with how to plan a Sri Lanka trip.

7-day itinerary questions

Is 7 days enough for Sri Lanka?

Seven days is enough for a focused first visit with three bases: the Cultural Triangle, Kandy, and either the hill country or the coast. It is not enough to add safaris, the south coast and the north without long daily drives.

Can I include the Ella train in a 7-day itinerary?

Yes. Take the train from Kandy to Ella on day five, spend a night or two in Ella, then drive back to the airport. The return drive takes most of a day, so it suits an evening flight best.

Should I add a beach to one week in Sri Lanka?

Add a beach if rest matters more than tea country. Bentota or Negombo keep the last drive short. Between December and March the west coast is in season. From May to September, Trincomalee on the east coast is the seasonal alternative.
