A Sri Lanka tourist SIM card is the cheapest way to stay connected. You can buy one at Bandaranaike International Airport, where Dialog has stores just past customs in the arrivals hall. Bring your passport, because SIM registration is required. Tourist eSIMs are also available if your phone supports them. Hotel Wi-Fi is common but can be slow in the hills.

Where to buy a tourist SIM

Dialog’s customer FAQ says its two airport stores are right after the customs desk in the arrivals lobby. Its tourist SIM guide describes physical SIM and eSIM options. Other networks also sell tourist SIMs at their own outlets.

Tips for staying connected

  • Make sure your phone is unlocked before you leave home.
  • Buy at the airport if you need data for your first day. Otherwise, city outlets also sell tourist packs.
  • Coverage is good in towns and along main roads, but weaker in remote parks and high valleys.
  • Download offline maps for areas such as Horton Plains or Knuckles.

Do I need a passport to buy a SIM in Sri Lanka?

Yes. Foreign visitors register a SIM against their passport. Carry the original passport when buying, and avoid unregistered SIMs from street sellers, which may stop working.
