Sri Lanka travel insurance should cover medical treatment and emergency evacuation as a minimum. The UK government says treatment in private hospitals can be expensive, and that emergency care outside the main cities is limited. Check that your policy also covers the activities you plan, such as hiking, surfing, diving or driving, and declare any health conditions.
Why insurance matters in Sri Lanka
The UK government’s health advice for Sri Lanka makes three points worth knowing:
- Treatment in private hospitals can be expensive.
- Emergency medical treatment outside the main cities is not readily available, so you may need to be moved to Colombo.
- Repatriation options in an emergency are limited and very expensive.
It also lists dengue among the health risks and advises checking vaccine recommendations at least eight weeks before you travel.
What your policy should cover
GOV.UK’s foreign travel insurance guidance explains what to look for in a policy.

Local planning noteKeep your policy number and the insurer’s emergency line on your phone and on paper. Share them with your chauffeur guide, who can help if you need a hospital.

Travel insurance questions
Do I need travel insurance for Sri Lanka?
It is strongly advised. The UK government says private hospital treatment can be expensive, emergency care outside main cities is limited, and repatriation is very expensive. Insurance covers these costs if something goes wrong.
Does travel insurance cover surfing and hiking in Sri Lanka?
Not always. Many policies exclude or limit adventure activities. Check that surfing, hiking, diving or rafting is named in your policy, and add an activity extension if needed.
Is driving a tuk-tuk covered by travel insurance?
Often not, unless you hold the right licences and your policy covers it. The UK government says you need a 1949 International Driving Permit and a Sri Lankan recognition permit to drive a hire vehicle.
