A Colombo heritage walk covers two neighbouring districts. In Pettah, see the red-and-white Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque, the market streets and the Dutch-era Wolvendaal Church. In Fort, see the colonial clock tower, the Old Dutch Hospital and the old commercial buildings. The walk takes about three hours, and early morning is the coolest time.
A walking route through Pettah and Fort
Wolvendaal Church
A Dutch Reformed church with walls about five feet thick, built between 1749 and 1757. It is still used for Sunday services.
Pettah market streets
Each street has its own trade, from spices and textiles to hardware. Walk slowly and keep your bag in front.
Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque
The red-and-white mosque on Second Cross Street, with its date of 1908 above the entrance. Visitors should dress modestly and avoid prayer times.
Old Town Hall and the Dutch Museum
Two colonial buildings in Pettah that show how the old town looked before modern Colombo.
Fort clock tower and Old Dutch Hospital
Finish in Fort with a lunch stop at the restored Dutch Hospital, now home to restaurants and shops.
The Sunday Observer’s history of Wolvendaal Church gives more background on its Dutch origins.

Tips for walking in Colombo
- Timing: Pettah is busiest in the late morning. Fort is quietest on Sunday, when offices are closed.
- Transport: use a tuk-tuk between Pettah and Galle Face. The UK government’s safety advice suggests agreeing a price first or using a metered one.
- Dress: cover shoulders and knees for the mosque and churches, and remove shoes where asked.
- Finish at sunset: end on Galle Face Green, the seafront promenade, as families come out in the evening.
Local planning noteA heritage walk works well on your first or last day, when you are near the airport. It avoids a long drive after or before a flight.

Colombo heritage walk questions
Is Colombo worth a day of sightseeing?
Yes, especially on your first or last day. A morning walk through Pettah and Fort shows the city’s Dutch, British and Muslim heritage, and you can finish at sunset on Galle Face Green.
Can tourists visit the Red Mosque in Colombo?
Yes, outside prayer times. Dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, remove shoes at the entrance, and women may be asked to cover their hair. Friday midday prayers are the busiest time to avoid.
How old is Wolvendaal Church?
Wolvendaal Church was built by the Dutch between 1749 and 1757. It is one of the oldest Protestant churches in Sri Lanka and is still used for Sunday services.
