Sri Lanka Shore Excursions: Colombo, Galle and Beyond

Sri Lanka shore excursions usually start from Colombo, and some cruises also call at Hambantota or Trincomalee. With a typical day in port, choose one main sight rather than three. From Colombo, that means a city tour, Galle Fort by expressway or Kandy for long calls. A private car and driver lets you set your own return buffer.

Do cruise passengers need an ETA to go ashore?

Ask your cruise line first. Some lines arrange entry for their passengers, while others expect you to apply yourself. The UK government’s entry guidance says visitors need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to enter Sri Lanka.

Checked 27 October 2026If you need to apply, use only the official Sri Lanka ETA website. Nationals of 40 countries currently receive the tourist ETA free of charge.

A Colombo city tour can include the Pettah markets, the Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque, Gangaramaya Temple, Independence Square and a sunset walk on Galle Face Green.

Galle Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage site with walkable ramparts. Our Galle Fort guide covers what to see in a few hours.

Hambantota and Trincomalee

Hambantota

Hambantota International Port has received cruise calls, as the Daily Mirror reported. From here, a safari in a nearby national park is the usual choice.

Trincomalee

See Koneswaram Temple on Swami Rock and Fort Frederick, then spend time on Nilaveli or Marble Beach.

Wildlife options are covered on our wildlife and nature safaris page.

How to avoid missing the ship

  • Share the all-aboard time: give your driver the ship’s all-aboard time, not the departure time.
  • Plan the return first: decide when you must leave the last sight, then fill the time before it.
  • Allow for the port gate: leaving and re-entering the port can take time on busy days.
  • Carry the ship’s agent number: keep it with you in case of delay.

Independent excursions are not covered by the cruise line’s guarantee to wait. Build in a generous buffer.

Shore excursion questions

Can I visit Kandy on a shore excursion from Colombo?

Only on a long port call. Kandy is several hours from Colombo each way, and traffic leaving the city is unpredictable. On a standard day in port, a Colombo city tour or Galle Fort leaves a safer margin.

Is a private shore excursion better than the cruise line’s tour?

A private car gives you a smaller group and your own pace. The trade-off is that the ship will not wait for an independent tour. Choose a nearby sight and plan the return time first.

What can I do in Colombo in one day?

Visit the Pettah markets and the Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque in the morning, then Gangaramaya Temple and Independence Square. Finish with a walk on Galle Face Green before returning to the port.
