A Sri Lanka halal holiday is simple to arrange because the island has a long-established Muslim community, with mosques and halal restaurants in most towns. The details that matter are hotel meals, alcohol-free rooms, private swimming options and a driver who plans stops around prayer times. Ask for each of these when you request a quote.
What should you ask for in a halal package?
Sri Lankan hotels vary in how they handle halal requests, so confirm each one in writing before you book.
Where to stay and what to see
Colombo
Visit the red-and-white Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque in Pettah, and eat at the Muslim-run restaurants in the old town.
Beruwala
A west-coast town with a long Muslim history. By tradition, the Kechimalai Mosque marks where early Arab traders landed.
Kandy and the hills
Kandy has central mosques and halal restaurants. Hill-country hotels can usually arrange halal meals with notice.
The east coast
Towns such as Kattankudy have large Muslim communities. The east coast is in season from May to September.

Entry for travellers from Gulf and Asian countries
Many Muslim-majority countries are on the official free tourist ETA list. They include Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain, Malaysia, Indonesia, Turkey and Pakistan.
Checked 27 October 2026The free tourist visa gives 30 days with double entry. You still need to apply for the ETA online before travelling. Check the official list again before you book, because it can change.
Travelling during Ramadan or Eid
The Central Bank of Sri Lanka’s 2027 holiday list gives Eid-ul-Fitr as 10 March 2027 and Eid-ul-Adha as 17 May 2027. Ramadan 2027 therefore falls in February and early March, during peak season on the south-west coast.
- Ask hotels for an early suhoor and an iftar meal at sunset. Larger hotels often arrange both with notice.
- Keep sightseeing to the cooler morning hours and avoid long drives in the afternoon.
- Book Eid travel early, as hotels fill with local families during the holiday.
Dress and visiting temples
Modest clothing suits both Muslim travellers and Sri Lanka’s Buddhist and Hindu temples. Cover your shoulders and knees, and remove shoes at temple entrances. Our temple etiquette guide explains the rules.

Halal holiday questions
Is halal food easy to find in Sri Lanka?
Yes, in most towns. Sri Lanka has a long-established Muslim community, and Muslim-run restaurants serve biryani, rice and curry and kottu. In hotels, halal meat depends on the kitchen, so ask the operator to confirm each hotel in writing.
Can I pray during a Sri Lanka tour?
Yes. A private chauffeur guide can plan stops at mosques along the route and time drive days around prayers. Ask in advance for Friday stops for Jumu’ah, and request a prayer mat and Qibla direction at each hotel.
Is Sri Lanka a good destination during Ramadan?
It can be. Ramadan 2027 falls in February and early March, when the south-west coast is in season. Plan sightseeing for the mornings, ask hotels for suhoor and iftar, and book Eid dates early.
