Sinhala and Tamil New Year: what it means for your trip

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka’s 2027 holiday list gives 13 April as the day before New Year and 14 April as New Year Day. Bak Full Moon Poya follows on 20 April.

  • Closures: many shops and small restaurants close for several days around the New Year. Hotels and main sights stay open.
  • Roads: traffic is heavy before and after the holiday as people travel to their home villages.
  • Customs: families light the hearth at auspicious times, share milk rice and sweets, and play traditional games. Visitors are often welcome to watch village events.
  • Hill stations: Nuwara Eliya is busy with domestic visitors in April, so book hotels early.
