A Sri Lanka hill country tour usually runs from Kandy through the tea estates around Nuwara Eliya to Ella. Allow four or five nights, with one scenic train section and at least one walk. Pack warm layers, because the highest towns are much cooler than the coast, especially in the early morning.

Nights 1–2

Kandy

Visit the Temple of the Tooth in the evening and the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya the next morning.

Night 3

Nuwara Eliya

Drive up through the tea estates, with a factory visit on the way. Evenings here are cool, so pack a warm layer.

Optional

Horton Plains

Start before dawn for the walk to World’s End. Horton Plains is part of the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka World Heritage property.

Nights 4–5

Ella

Take the train from Nanu Oya towards Ella while your driver carries the luggage. Walk to Little Adam’s Peak or see the Nine Arch Bridge.

Should you take the train or drive?

Do both. One train section shows the tea country from the carriage, and the road covers the rest. Reserved seats sell out in busy months, so book through the Sri Lanka Railways reservation system as early as you can.

Our train ticket guide explains the booking steps. The scenic train journey page covers the experience itself.

Adding a tea experience

Factory visit

Several working tea factories near Nuwara Eliya welcome visitors. You see withering, rolling and drying, then taste the result.

Estate walk

A walk between the tea rows shows how steep the slopes are. Ask your guide to arrange it with estate permission.

Bungalow stay

A night in a former planter’s bungalow suits travellers who want a quiet, slower evening.

Respect the workers

Ask before photographing tea pluckers, and do not walk through rows where people are working.

Checked 19 October 2026The UK government’s Sri Lanka travel advice reports increased flood and landslide risk during the inter-monsoon season. Hill roads are most affected, so build in a spare half-day.

Hill country questions

How many days do you need in Sri Lanka’s hill country?

Four or five nights covers Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ella at a comfortable pace. With only three nights, choose either Nuwara Eliya or Ella rather than both. Add a night if you want the early walk at Horton Plains.

Is Nuwara Eliya or Ella better for a first visit?

Nuwara Eliya suits travellers who want tea estates, cooler air and a quieter evening. Ella suits travellers who want short hikes, viewpoints and cafés. Many routes stay one night in Nuwara Eliya and two in Ella, linked by the train.

Does it get cold in Sri Lanka’s hill country?

It gets noticeably cooler than the coast, especially at night and in the early morning around Nuwara Eliya and Horton Plains. A fleece or light jacket and long trousers are enough for most visitors. Rain is possible, so pack a waterproof layer.
