A Sri Lanka beach holiday works best when the coast matches the month. The south and west coasts, including Bentota, Unawatuna and Mirissa, are usually best from December to March. The east coast, including Trincomalee, Pasikuda and Arugam Bay, is usually best from May to September. Most packages pair three or four inland nights with a beach base.

Which Sri Lankan coast should you choose for your month?

The official Sri Lanka Tourism climate guide calls December to February peak season on the southwest coast. It names May to September as the best time for the dry zone, including Trincomalee and Arugam Bay.

How to structure a beach and culture package

Put the beach at the end. You finish the touring days rested, and a coast close to the airport makes the final transfer easier.

7 nights

Three nights in the Cultural Triangle, then four on the coast that suits your month.

10 nights

Two nights in the Cultural Triangle, one in Kandy, two in the hills, then five at the beach.

14 nights

The full inland loop with a safari, then four or five nights by the sea.

Two beaches

Only split the beach stay if both coasts suit your month. Otherwise one base is more restful.

Beach activities to plan into the package

  • Whale watching: from Mirissa in the south-west season, or Trincomalee in the east. See our whale watching guide.
  • Surfing: Weligama and Hiriketiya in the south, Arugam Bay in the east.
  • Snorkelling: Pigeon Island off Nilaveli is a common choice on the east coast.
  • Galle Fort: an easy half-day from Unawatuna or Bentota.

Sea safetyThe UK government’s safety advice says many beaches have dangerous surf or rip tides at certain times of year. Ask your hotel or tour operator before going in the sea.

Beach holiday questions

Where is the best beach in Sri Lanka in July?

In July, choose the east coast. Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Pasikuda and Arugam Bay sit in the dry zone, which the official Sri Lanka Tourism climate guide names as best from May to September. The south-west coast is in its wetter monsoon season then.

How many nights should I spend at the beach in Sri Lanka?

Three to five nights at one beach base suits most packages. It gives you at least two full days by the sea. Splitting a short beach stay between two towns adds a transfer day without adding much rest.

Is it safe to swim at Sri Lankan beaches?

Some beaches are calm and others have strong currents. The UK government warns that many beaches have dangerous surf or rip tides at certain times of year. Ask your hotel or operator before swimming, and use beaches they recommend.
