The Pekoe Trail is a 300 km walking trail through Sri Lanka’s tea country, divided into 22 stages. A Pekoe Trail walking holiday usually picks four to eight stages, with a driver moving your luggage between estate bungalows or guesthouses. The official site recommends December to April and July to September. Check its trail alerts before each stage.

What is the Pekoe Trail?

The trail follows old estate paths and roads through the central highlands and tea districts, including the areas around Hatton, Haputale and Ella. According to the official Pekoe Trail FAQ, walking all 22 stages typically takes 16 to 22 days.

The same FAQ says the best time to walk most of the trail is December to April and July to September. The trail is open year-round, but weather varies by region.

How to structure a walking holiday

Choose a section

Pick four to eight consecutive stages in one area. Fewer hotel changes mean more time walking and less time packing.

Move the luggage by car

Walk with a day pack. Your chauffeur guide drives the bags to the next bungalow and can collect you if the weather turns.

Add a rest day

After three walking days, plan a lighter day with a tea-factory visit or a train ride.

Book a local guide

A guide is not required, but the FAQ strongly recommends one for remote sections and local context.

Trail Pass, alerts and safety

Checked 27 October 2026The official Trail Pass page lists a contribution of US$10 per stage for overseas visitors, bought through the trail’s app or web portal. The trail’s home page showed Stage 2 closed and several stages on alert when we checked.

  • Alerts: check the trail’s alerts before every stage, as sections close after heavy rain.
  • Leeches: the FAQ warns of leeches in wet months. Wear leech socks and closed shoes.
  • Water and sun: carry 1.5 to 2 litres per person, a hat and sunscreen.
  • Camping: not permitted, because much of the route crosses private or plantation land.
  • Insurance: make sure your policy covers hiking.
