Sri Lanka in August suits a route through the Cultural Triangle and Kandy that finishes on the east coast. The south-west coast and hills are in the south-west monsoon, while Trincomalee, Pasikuda and Arugam Bay are in season. Kandy’s Esala Perahera often falls in July or August, so confirm its dates before booking Kandy nights.
What is the weather like in Sri Lanka in August?
The Sri Lanka Tourism climate guide places August in the south-west monsoon, with heavy rain on the south-west coast and hills. It names May to September as the best time for the dry zone, including Trincomalee, Arugam Bay and Jaffna.
| Region | August conditions | Fit for August |
|---|---|---|
| East coast | Dry season, calmer seas on most beaches | Best beach choice |
| Cultural Triangle | Hot and mostly dry | Good for sightseeing and safaris |
| Kandy and hills | Showers, mist on higher ground | Include, with flexible plans |
| South-west coast | Monsoon rain and rough seas | Not the main beach stay |
The Kandy Esala Perahera
The Esala Perahera is a series of night processions from the Temple of the Tooth, with dancers, drummers and decorated elephants. The temple sets the dates each year by the lunar calendar.
Checked 27 October 2026In 2026, the processions began on 18 August, as Newsfirst reported. The 2027 dates had not been announced when we checked. Do not book Kandy nights for the festival until they are confirmed.
- Hotels: Kandy fills quickly during the final nights. Book as soon as dates are known.
- Seats: reserved seats along the route are the most comfortable way to watch. Ask your operator to arrange them.
- Timing: processions start in the evening and run late. Plan a slow next morning.
Our Kandy Esala Perahera page explains how to add the festival to a private tour.

A twelve-day August route
- Days 1–3: Sigiriya, Dambulla and an elephant safari.
- Days 4–5: Kandy, timed with the Perahera if the dates match.
- Days 6–7: the hill-country train to Ella, with flexible walking plans.
- Days 8–12: Arugam Bay for surf, or Trincomalee and Nilaveli for calmer water.
Arugam Bay is a well-known surf spot from May to September. See our surfing in Sri Lanka page. For the inland section, read our Cultural Triangle tour guide.

August travel questions
Is August a good time to visit Sri Lanka?
Yes, if you choose the right regions. The Cultural Triangle and the east coast are in season, and Kandy may host the Esala Perahera. The south-west coast and hills get monsoon rain, so they are not the main beach choice.
When is the Kandy Esala Perahera?
The dates change each year because they follow the lunar calendar. In 2026 the processions began on 18 August. The 2027 dates had not been announced when we checked, so confirm them before booking.
Which beach is best in Sri Lanka in August?
Choose the east coast. Arugam Bay suits surfers, while Trincomalee, Nilaveli and Pasikuda have calmer water for swimming. Always ask locally about sea conditions before going in.
