A Sri Lanka adventure holiday can combine white-water rafting at Kitulgala, hikes around Ella and the Knuckles Range, and a pre-dawn climb of Adam’s Peak in pilgrimage season. Add surfing or kitesurfing on the coast that suits your month. Plan one main activity per base, and check that your travel insurance covers each one.

Adventure holiday questions

When is the best time for an adventure holiday in Sri Lanka?

It depends on the activity. Hiking and rafting are possible most of the year, but heavy rain can close trails or raise rivers. Surf on the south coast from about December to March, or at Arugam Bay from about May to September.

When can you climb Adam’s Peak?

Most visitors climb during the pilgrimage season, which usually runs from about December to May. The climb is usually made overnight to reach the summit for sunrise. Outside the season, facilities on the path are limited and the weather is less reliable.

Do I need special insurance for adventure activities in Sri Lanka?

Check that your policy names each activity you plan, such as rafting, trekking, surfing or kitesurfing. The UK government advises that insurance should cover your itinerary and planned activities. Some standard policies exclude water sports or high-altitude hiking.
