Nuwara Eliya’s colonial heritage comes from its time as a British hill station in the nineteenth century, which earned it the nickname “Little England”. The main sights are the red-brick post office, the Grand Hotel, the Hill Club, Victoria Park, Gregory Lake and the old tea bungalows on the estates around town. Half a day on foot covers the centre.

A red-brick, Tudor-style building in the town centre that still works as a post office. Send a postcard home.
The Grand Hotel
Built as a governor’s residence and later turned into a hotel. Non-guests can visit for afternoon tea.

- Hakgala Botanical Garden: a hillside garden a short drive south-east of town, with roses and tree ferns.
- The railway: trains on the hill-country line stop at Nanu Oya, a short drive from town. Reserve seats through Sri Lanka Railways online reservations.
When to visit
The Sri Lanka Tourism climate guide describes March and April as a good time for the hill country. The south-west monsoon brings heavier rain to the hills from May to September. April is also the town’s busiest month, when Sri Lankan families come for the holidays. Our Sri Lanka in April guide covers the New Year period.
Local planning noteEvenings can be cold for a tropical country. Bring a fleece or light jacket, and check whether your hotel room has heating or extra blankets.
Our hill country tour guide places Nuwara Eliya on a route with Kandy and Ella. More ideas are in ways to explore Sri Lanka’s culture.

Nuwara Eliya questions
Why is Nuwara Eliya called Little England?
The British developed Nuwara Eliya as a hill station in the nineteenth century, building houses, clubs and gardens in an English style. Its cool climate, red-brick post office and Tudor-style buildings gave it the nickname.
Is there a train station in Nuwara Eliya?
Trains on the hill-country line stop at Nanu Oya, a short drive from the town centre. Your driver can meet you at the station with the luggage if you take the train from Kandy.
Can non-guests visit the Grand Hotel in Nuwara Eliya?
Yes. Many visitors stop for afternoon tea in its lounge or garden. Dress smartly, and check opening times locally, as they can change in the busy April season.
