The Anuradhapura ancient city was Sri Lanka’s first great capital and is still an active pilgrimage centre. Its main sights are the giant stupas of Jetavanaramaya, Abhayagiri and Ruwanwelisaya, the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi tree, and the rock temple of Isurumuniya. The site covers a wide area, so plan a full day with a car or bicycle.

Tickets and practical points

  • Tickets: the Central Cultural Fund lists Anuradhapura as open 7 am to 5 pm, with online booking. The Cultural Triangle round ticket also covers it.
  • Active temples: the Sri Maha Bodhi and Ruwanwelisaya are places of worship. Dress modestly and remove shoes and hats.
  • Getting around: distances between sights are long. Use your car or hire a bicycle for the inner sites.
  • Heat: start early, rest at midday and return for the evening rituals.

Local planning noteAnuradhapura is busiest on Poson, the June full moon, and on Vesak in May. Expect large crowds of pilgrims in white and some road closures.

Pilgrims visit the eight sacred places, the Atamasthana, in a set order. Our Buddhist pilgrimage tour guide explains it. For the medieval capital, read our Polonnaruwa guide. Anuradhapura is on UNESCO’s World Heritage list for Sri Lanka.
