A Sri Lanka Buddhist pilgrimage tour usually centres on four places: the sacred city of Anuradhapura, Mihintale, the Dambulla cave temple and the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy. Six to eight days covers them at a respectful pace. Add Sri Pada (Adam’s Peak) if you travel during the pilgrimage season, which runs from December to Vesak in May.

Which sacred sites should a pilgrimage include?

Anuradhapura, Dambulla and Kandy are all on UNESCO’s World Heritage list for Sri Lanka. Mihintale sits just outside Anuradhapura and is usually visited on the same trip.

Anuradhapura

The Sri Maha Bodhi, grown from a cutting of the tree in Bodh Gaya, and the eight sacred places known as the Atamasthana. Plan a full day.

Mihintale

Where Buddhism is traditionally said to have been introduced to Sri Lanka. Climb in the early morning to avoid hot stone steps.

Dambulla

Five cave shrines filled with Buddha statues and painted ceilings, above a rock stairway.

Kandy

The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. Attend an evening ritual and allow time for the queue.

Kandy

Visit the Temple of the Tooth for a morning or evening ritual. Spend the rest of the day at the forest hermitages around Kandy.

Day 6

Drive to Dalhousie for a night climb to the summit at sunrise. Out of season, spend a quiet day in Kandy instead.

Day 7

Colombo temples and departure

Visit Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara or Gangaramaya before your flight.

The ancient cities overlap with our Cultural Triangle tour guide, which covers Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya if you want heritage stops as well.

When to go: Poya days and festivals

Every full moon is a Poya day and a public holiday. Temples fill with families dressed in white, which is moving to see but slower to visit.

Pilgrimage tour questions

What are the eight sacred places in Anuradhapura?

The Atamasthana are eight sacred places in Anuradhapura, including the Sri Maha Bodhi, Ruwanwelisaya, Thuparamaya, Lovamahapaya, Abhayagiri, Jetavanaramaya, Mirisawetiya and Lankarama. Most pilgrims visit them in one full day with a driver or by bicycle.

When is the best time for a Buddhist pilgrimage in Sri Lanka?

Any month works for the main temples. Poya full-moon days are the most atmospheric but also the busiest. Travel between December and May if you want to climb Sri Pada during the official pilgrimage season.

Do I need to wear white at Sri Lankan temples?

White is customary for pilgrims and appreciated, but not required for visitors. What matters is modest clothing covering the shoulders and knees, removing shoes and hats, and respectful behaviour around Buddha statues.
