When to book a Sri Lanka holiday depends on your travel dates. For Christmas, New Year and February half term, book several months ahead, as the best hotels fill early. Shoulder months need less notice. Festival dates such as the Kandy Perahera should be booked as soon as they are announced. Train seats are the item most likely to sell out.

What to book first

  1. Flights: fares and seat choice tend to narrow closer to peak dates.
  2. Key hotels: beach and boutique hotels with few rooms fill first.
  3. Train seats: book through Sri Lanka Railways online reservations as soon as dates are fixed.
  4. Festival nights: Kandy hotels during the Perahera. See our festivals calendar.
  5. ETA: apply once flights are booked.

Local planning noteBooking early helps most for small boutique hotels and peak dates. For a shoulder-month trip with flexible hotels, booking a few weeks ahead is often enough.

Booking time questions

How far in advance should I book a Sri Lanka holiday?

For Christmas, New Year and the main January to March season, book several months ahead for the best hotels. Shoulder months such as October and November are more flexible, and a few weeks can be enough.

What sells out first in Sri Lanka?

Reserved seats on the scenic hill-country trains, small boutique hotels in peak weeks, and Kandy hotels during the Esala Perahera. Book those as soon as your dates are fixed.

Is it cheaper to book a Sri Lanka holiday early?

For peak dates, booking early usually secures better choice and rates. For shoulder months, prices are steadier, and booking later can still work. The travel month matters more than the booking date.
