Vesak in Sri Lanka marks the birth, enlightenment and passing of the Buddha on the May full moon. In 2027 it falls on 19 May, with 20 May also a holiday. Homes and streets are hung with paper lanterns, and towns build illuminated pandals. Volunteers run thousands of dansal, free food stalls open to everyone.
What happens during Vesak?
Lanterns
Families make and hang paper lanterns, including the eight-sided atapattama, outside their homes.
Pandals
Large illuminated structures, known as thoran, show scenes from the Buddha’s life in flashing lights.
Dansal
Free food and drink stalls run by volunteers. A 2025 report counted more than 15,000 across the island.
Temple visits
Devotees dressed in white observe the eight precepts and spend the day at temples.
The 2025 figures come from Hiru News, which also reported about 20 pandals in Colombo. Dates are from the Central Bank of Sri Lanka’s 2027 holiday list.

Where to see Vesak
- Colombo: the Vesak zone around Gangaramaya Temple and Beira Lake, plus pandals across the city. Ada Derana reported zones at Gangaramaya and Braybrooke Place in 2025.
- Kandy: lanterns around the lake and the Temple of the Tooth. Read our Temple of the Tooth guide.
- Anuradhapura: pilgrims at the Sri Maha Bodhi and the great stupas. See our Anuradhapura guide.
- Any town: even small villages build lanterns and dansal.
Local planning notePandals light up after dark, and roads in Colombo become very crowded. Go on foot from your hotel if you can, or ask your driver to drop you near the zone and wait.
How visitors should take part
- Accept dansal food gratefully, and queue with everyone else.
- Dress modestly, and wear white if you visit a temple.
- Ask before photographing people at prayer.
Our temple etiquette guide explains the basics. Poson, the next full moon, is the main festival at Mihintale. See the full Sri Lanka festivals calendar.
