A Sri Lanka tour package from India is one of the easiest overseas trips to plan. Indian nationals are on Sri Lanka’s free tourist ETA list, flights to Colombo are short, and vegetarian food is easy to find. Most travellers from India choose five to eight nights, combining Kandy and the hills with either a beach or temple visits.

Do Indian citizens need a visa for Sri Lanka?

Indian citizens still need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), but the tourist ETA is currently free of charge. India is one of the 40 countries on the official Sri Lanka ETA list.

Checked 27 October 2026The free tourist visa is valid for 30 days, with double entry within that period. Staying longer needs an extension and the usual fee. Apply only on the official ETA website.

Our Sri Lanka ETA guide walks through the application step by step.

How many nights should an India to Sri Lanka package be?

4–5 nights

Kandy and Nuwara Eliya, with one night near Colombo or on the west coast. Good for a long weekend or festival break.

6–7 nights

Add Sigiriya and Dambulla, or Ella and its tea trails. This is the most popular length for couples and families.

8–10 nights

The Cultural Triangle, Kandy, the hills and a beach stay. It leaves room for a safari.

Temple focus

Add Hindu temples such as Munneswaram near Chilaw or Koneswaram in Trincomalee to the route.

Food, language and money

  • Vegetarian and Jain meals: Sri Lankan rice and curry includes many vegetable dishes. Tell your operator in advance so hotels can prepare Jain or no-onion meals.
  • Language: English is widely used in hotels and by chauffeur guides. Tamil is spoken in the north, east and parts of the hill country.
  • Money: Sri Lanka uses the Sri Lankan rupee. Hotels and larger shops take cards, but carry rupees for small temples, tips and roadside stops.

Questions from Indian travellers

Is the Sri Lanka visa free for Indians?

Yes, at the time of checking. India is on the official list of 40 countries whose nationals receive a free 30-day tourist visa. You still need to apply for the ETA online before you travel, and extensions are charged.

How many days are enough for Sri Lanka from India?

Five to seven nights suits most first trips from India. That covers Kandy, the tea country and either Sigiriya or a beach. Eight to ten nights lets you add a safari and slow the pace.

Is vegetarian food easy to find in Sri Lanka?

Yes. Rice and curry usually includes several vegetable and lentil dishes, and Tamil restaurants serve familiar South Indian food. Tell your operator about Jain or no-onion needs early so hotels can prepare.

Is May a good time to visit Sri Lanka from India?

May can work if you plan around the south-west monsoon. Focus on the Cultural Triangle and the east coast, which are in season from May to September, and keep hill-country days flexible.
