Sri Lanka 5 Day Itinerary: Two Routes That Work

A Sri Lanka 5 day itinerary works best when it covers one region properly. Choose either Kandy and the tea hills around Nuwara Eliya, or Sigiriya and the ancient cities of the Cultural Triangle. Five days gives you two or three bases with time to see them. Trying to add Ella, Yala and the south coast turns the trip into a drive.

Which five-day route should you choose?

Pick the region that suits your month and interests. Both routes start and finish at Bandaranaike International Airport.

The Sri Lanka Tourism climate guide says the south-west monsoon brings heavy rain to the south-west coast and hills from May to September. It calls March and April a good time for the Cultural Triangle and hill country.

Route 1: Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Bentota

AirportKandyNuwara EliyaBentota
Day 1

Airport to Kandy

Drive inland to Kandy and keep the afternoon light after the flight. Walk around Kandy Lake before dinner if you have the energy.

Day 2

Kandy

Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya. Cover your shoulders and knees for the temple.

Day 3

Into tea country

Take the hill-country train towards Nanu Oya for Nuwara Eliya, or drive via the Ramboda waterfalls. Stop at a working tea factory on the way.

Day 4

Down to the west coast

This is the longest drive of the trip. Leave after breakfast and arrive in Bentota for a late afternoon on the beach or the river.

Day 5

Beach morning, then fly

Bentota is a manageable drive from the airport for an afternoon or evening flight. For an early flight, sleep near the airport on night four instead.

If you want the train, reserve seats through Sri Lanka Railways online reservations. Our train-ticket guide explains the booking steps. Your driver takes the luggage by road.

Route 2: Sigiriya, the ancient cities and Kandy

AirportSigiriyaKandyAirport
Day 1

Airport to Sigiriya

Drive north to the Sigiriya or Habarana area. If you land early, stop at the Dambulla cave temple on the way.

Day 2

Sigiriya Rock

Climb early, before the heat and the queues. Spend the afternoon resting or on a village walk. Read our Sigiriya climbing tips first.

Day 3

Polonnaruwa or a safari

Choose the ancient city of Polonnaruwa in the morning or an elephant safari in the afternoon. Doing both makes a long, hot day.

Day 4

Drive to Kandy

Travel south with an optional spice-garden stop near Matale. Visit the Temple of the Tooth in the evening.

Day 5

Kandy to the airport

See the botanical gardens in the morning, then drive to the airport. Allow a generous buffer because traffic near Colombo is unpredictable.

Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa, Dambulla and Kandy are all on UNESCO’s World Heritage list for Sri Lanka. That is why five days here still feels full without long drives.

What to leave out of five days

  • Ella and Yala together: each adds a long transfer day. Save them for a seven-day trip or longer.
  • A different hotel every night: packing each morning costs more time than it saves.
  • Two safaris: one well-timed safari is enough on a short trip.

With two more days you can add Ella or a longer beach stay. See our 7-day Sri Lanka itinerary for that version.

Local planning noteDrive times in the hills depend on traffic, weather and roadworks. Your chauffeur guide will suggest the departure time each morning, and a tour planner should confirm the timings before you book.

Five-day itinerary questions

Is 5 days enough for Sri Lanka?

Five days is enough for one region, not the whole island. You can see Kandy and the tea country, or Sigiriya and the Cultural Triangle, without rushing. Ella, Yala and the south coast each need extra days because the drives are long.

Can I see Ella in a 5 day Sri Lanka itinerary?

It is possible but tiring. Ella adds a long drive back to the airport, which only suits an evening flight. Most five-day trips are better with Nuwara Eliya for tea country, keeping Ella for a week or longer.

Which 5 day route is best in July?

In July, the culture route through Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa and Kandy is the safer choice. The official climate guide says the south-west coast and hills get heavy rain from May to September, while the dry zone is in season.

Should I spend the last night near the airport?

Spend the last night near the airport if your flight leaves before midday. From Kandy or Bentota, an afternoon or evening flight is usually manageable on the final day, but traffic near Colombo can add time.
