A Sri Lanka holiday from the UK needs three decisions before anything else: which coast suits your dates, how you fly and how your money is protected. SriLankan Airlines flies non-stop from London Heathrow to Colombo. British citizens need an ETA, currently free, and a passport valid for six months after arrival.
What do British travellers need to enter Sri Lanka?
The UK government’s entry requirements for Sri Lanka say you need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before you travel. Your passport must have an expiry date at least six months after the day you arrive.
Checked 27 October 2026The United Kingdom is on the official ETA website’s list of 40 countries with a free 30-day tourist visa. Apply on the official ETA website only, and keep the approval with your passport.
Our Sri Lanka ETA guide explains the form in more detail.
How do you fly from the UK to Sri Lanka?
SriLankan Airlines lists non-stop flights from London to Colombo. Many travellers also connect through Gulf or Indian hubs, especially from regional UK airports.
- Non-stop: the shortest journey and the easiest choice for families with young children.
- One stop: more departure airports and times. Check the connection time and the arrival hour in Colombo.
- Arrival day: plan a short first drive. The night after a long flight is not the time to reach Ella.
Which coast suits UK school holidays?
Sri Lanka has two monsoons that affect different coasts. This table uses the Sri Lanka Tourism climate guide.
| UK holiday | Better region | Example plan |
|---|---|---|
| Christmas and February half term | South and west coasts, hills, Cultural Triangle | Culture first, then Bentota, Galle or Mirissa |
| Easter | Hill country and Cultural Triangle; showers in the afternoon | Early starts, a flexible beach stay |
| Summer holidays | East coast and Cultural Triangle | Sigiriya, Kandy, then Trincomalee or Arugam Bay |
| October half term | Inter-monsoon showers across the island | Inland touring with flexible days |

Is a Sri Lanka holiday ATOL protected?
It depends on how you book. ATOL is financial protection for package trips that include a flight, sold by an ATOL holder. A flight-only booking with an e-ticket is not ATOL protected.
Many UK travellers book flights themselves and buy the ground arrangements from a Sri Lankan operator. In that case, check the airline’s and operator’s terms separately, and buy travel insurance when you book. Our guide to package holidays versus independent travel compares the options.
Practical points for UK travellers
- Time difference: Sri Lanka is five and a half hours ahead of GMT and four and a half ahead of British Summer Time.
- Plugs: many sockets take UK three-pin plugs, but older buildings use round pins. Pack a universal adapter.
- Driving side: traffic drives on the left, as in the UK.

Questions from UK travellers
Do UK citizens need a visa for Sri Lanka?
British citizens need an Electronic Travel Authorization before travelling. At the time of checking, the UK is on Sri Lanka’s free tourist visa list, which gives 30 days with double entry. Apply only on the official ETA website.
Is there a direct flight from the UK to Sri Lanka?
Yes. SriLankan Airlines lists non-stop flights from London Heathrow to Colombo. Travellers from other UK airports usually connect through a Gulf or Indian hub, which adds a stop but widens the choice of times.
Where should I go in Sri Lanka in the UK summer holidays?
In July and August, combine the Cultural Triangle and Kandy with the east coast. The official climate guide names May to September as the best time for Trincomalee and Arugam Bay, while the south-west coast is wetter.
What is the time difference between the UK and Sri Lanka?
Sri Lanka is five and a half hours ahead of the UK in winter, when the UK is on GMT. During British Summer Time the difference is four and a half hours.
