The most-photographed Instagram spots in Sri Lanka include Sigiriya seen from Pidurangala, the Nine Arch Bridge and the Ella train. Galle Fort, Coconut Tree Hill in Mirissa, Lipton’s Seat and Kandy Lake complete the usual list. The light is best at sunrise, before crowds and mist. Temples have strict photo rules, so check them before you shoot.

Match your photo list to the season

The official Sri Lanka Tourism climate guide (checked 6 October 2026) places peak south-coast season in December to February. It names May to September as the best time for Trincomalee, Arugam Bay and Jaffna.

  • December to March: the clearest window for Galle, Mirissa and the south coast.
  • May to September: better for the east coast, Pasikudah and the north. The hills are greener but cloudier.
  • March to April: a good balance for the Cultural Triangle and the hills, with afternoon storms.

Photo rules that catch visitors out

Rules checked 6 October 2026 against the UK government’s Sri Lanka travel advice:

  • Do not pose for photos standing in front of a statue of Buddha. Disrespecting Buddhist images is a serious offence and can lead to arrest.
  • Visible Buddha tattoos can lead to refused entry or deportation.
  • Do not photograph military bases or government buildings, or fly drones near them.

Our temple etiquette guide covers dress and behaviour in more detail. If you plan aerial shots, read the Sri Lanka drone rules first.

Photographing people respectfully

  • Ask before photographing tea pluckers, monks, fishermen or children, and accept a no.
  • The stilt fishermen near Koggala often pose for visitors and expect payment. Agree the amount before you shoot.
  • Avoid filming people during worship or at funerals and religious processions unless you are invited.

Photo spot questions

What is the most photographed place in Sri Lanka?

Sigiriya Rock is among the most photographed places, and the classic view of it is from neighbouring Pidurangala Rock at sunrise. The Nine Arch Bridge in Ella and the hill-country train are close behind on most travellers’ photo lists.

Can you take photos of Buddha statues in Sri Lanka?

You can usually photograph a statue, but do not pose standing in front of it with your back turned. UK government advice says disrespecting Buddhist images is a serious offence. Follow any signs that ban photography or flash inside a shrine.

When is the best time of day for photos in Sri Lanka?

Sunrise is best at most viewpoints. Crowds are smaller, the heat is lower and hill-country mist usually builds later in the morning. Galle Fort and the beaches also work well at sunset.
