Fake Sri Lanka tour deals usually share a few warning signs: a price far below every other quote, no itemised inclusions, pressure to pay in full at once, and payment to a personal account. Before you pay, check that the agency is licensed in Sri Lanka Tourism’s official directory. Apply for your ETA only on the official government website.

Warning signs of a fake or misleading deal

How to check a Sri Lankan travel agent

Sri Lanka Tourism publishes a directory of registered travel agents. Each listing shows the registration number, licence number and licence validity. A separate directory of licensed tourist guides lets you search by name and language.

If an agency claims to be licensed, ask for its registration number and match it against the directory. Our guide to questions to ask a Sri Lanka tour operator covers the rest.

Look-alike visa websites

Several websites look official and charge a fee to file your ETA. Use only the official Sri Lanka ETA website. Nationals of 40 countries currently receive the tourist ETA free of charge, so a large “processing fee” is a red flag.

Scams on the ground

  • Cards: the UK government’s safety advice says bank card fraud is common. Use ATMs inside banks or hotels, and keep your card in sight.
  • Tuk-tuks: agree the fare before you set off, or use one with a working meter.
  • Unofficial guides: people at popular sites may offer guiding or shopping trips. Licensed guides can show a licence.

Local planning noteA genuine operator is happy to explain every line of a quote and to put changes in writing. If an agency avoids those questions, look elsewhere.

Fake deal questions
