A Sri Lanka south coast itinerary runs from the airport along the coast to Bentota, Galle, Mirissa and Tangalle, and can end with a safari near Yala. Seven nights allows two or three beach bases and one park. The south coast is usually best from December to March, when the south-west is in its main season.

When should you follow the south coast?

The Sri Lanka Tourism climate guide calls December to February peak season on the south-west coast. From May to September, the south-west monsoon brings heavy rain there, and the east coast is the better choice.

Day 1

Airport to Bentota

A short first drive along the expressway or coast road. Spend the afternoon on the beach.

Day 2

Bentota River, then Galle

Take a morning boat trip on the Bentota River. Continue south to stay inside or near Galle Fort.

Day 3

Galle Fort

Walk the ramparts early and late in the day, when it is cooler. Our Galle Fort guide covers what to see.

Day 4

Koggala to Mirissa

Pass the stilt-fishing stretch between Koggala and Weligama. Settle into Mirissa for two nights.

Day 5

Mirissa

Join an early whale-watching trip in season, or rest on the beach. See our whale watching page.

Day 6

Tangalle and Mulkirigala

Visit the Mulkirigala rock temple on the way. Tangalle’s beaches are quieter than Mirissa’s.

Day 7

Safari near Yala

Drive east to the Tissamaharama area for an afternoon jeep safari. Our wildlife safaris page compares the parks.

Day 8

Return to the airport

The expressway makes this a long but straightforward day. It suits an evening flight.

How many bases on the south coast?

Two bases

Galle and one beach town. The most relaxed option, with day trips along the coast.

Three bases

Bentota, Galle and Mirissa or Tangalle. More variety, with one extra packing day.

Add a safari

One night near Tissamaharama adds a park. Check the Department of Wildlife Conservation for closures before booking.

Sea safetyThe UK government’s safety advice says many beaches have dangerous surf or rip tides at certain times of year. Ask your hotel before swimming.

South coast itinerary questions

How many days do you need for the south coast of Sri Lanka?

Five to seven nights covers Galle and one or two beach towns at a relaxed pace. Add a night near Tissamaharama for a safari. With fewer than five nights, choose one beach base and day-trip to Galle.

What is the best month for the south coast of Sri Lanka?

December to March is the main season. The official climate guide calls December to February peak season on the south-west coast. From May to September, the south-west monsoon brings heavy rain, so the east coast is better then.

Should I stay in Galle or Mirissa?

Stay in Galle for history, cafés and walking the fort. Choose Mirissa for beach time and whale-watching trips in season. Many south coast itineraries use both, with two nights in each.
