Sri Lanka in December is a good choice for a culture-and-beach trip on the south and west coasts, which start their peak season this month. The east coast and the north are in their rainy season, so leave them for another time. Book early if you are travelling over Christmas and New Year.
What is the weather like in Sri Lanka in December?
December is the start of the northeast monsoon. It brings rain to the north and east, while the southwest coast usually turns drier with calmer seas.
Seasonal information checked 6 October 2026: the official Sri Lanka Tourism climate guide calls December to February the peak tourist season on the southwest coast. It mentions clear skies and calm seas for beaches, whale watching and watersports. This is a seasonal pattern, not a forecast, so check the Department of Meteorology close to your dates.
| Region | December conditions | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| South coast: Galle, Mirissa, Tangalle | In season; seas usually calming | Main beach base |
| West coast: Bentota, Negombo | In season | Short beach stay close to the airport |
| Cultural Triangle | Some rain possible; green and less hot | Visit early; keep a flexible day |
| Hill country | Cool nights; the eastern hills around Ella can be wet or misty | Pack layers and plan indoor options |
| East coast and Jaffna | Rainy season; rough seas | Better from May to September |
A ten-day December route
This route uses the inland sites first and saves four nights for the south coast. It avoids the regions that are wettest in December.
Arrive
Sleep near the airport or in Negombo after a long flight.
Sigiriya and Dambulla
Visit the Dambulla cave temple on the drive up and climb Sigiriya Rock the next morning. If a shower arrives, move the climb to the afternoon or the next day.
Kandy
See the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya. Add a day trip into tea country if the hills are clear.
South coast
Drive to Galle, Mirissa or Tangalle for four nights. Walk Galle Fort, take a whale-watching trip from Mirissa and leave two days for the beach.
Depart
The Southern Expressway links the coast to the airport. Allow extra time over the festive weekends.
With twelve days or more, add the Kandy to Ella train and two nights in Ella. Accept that December views from the train can be misty. Our 14-day Sri Lanka itinerary shows how the full loop fits together.
What to know about Christmas and New Year
The weeks around Christmas and New Year are the busiest of the season on the south coast.
- Book early: popular beach hotels fill first. Book your coastal stay as soon as your flights are fixed.
- Check festive terms: some hotels set minimum stays or add compulsory gala dinners on 24 and 31 December. Ask for these in writing.
- Reserve train seats early: hill-country trains are busy over the holidays. Use Sri Lanka Railways online reservations, or ask your driver to cover the route by road.
- Full moon holiday: every full moon (Poya) is a public holiday. Alcohol sales usually stop, and temples get busy with pilgrims.
What December is good for
- Whale watching: boats from Mirissa start their main season around December. Sea conditions decide each trip, so keep a spare morning. See our whale-watching trips.
- Beaches: compare Mirissa, Unawatuna and Hiriketiya in our south-coast beach guide.
- Adam’s Peak: the pilgrimage season traditionally begins on the December full moon. The night climb then has lights and open tea stalls along the path.
- Galle Fort: the dry season is a good time to walk the ramparts at sunset.

December travel questions
Is December a good time to visit Sri Lanka?
December is a good month for the south and west coasts, which begin their peak season. Inland culture and the hills also work with some flexibility for showers. The east coast and the north are in their rainy season, so they suit other months better.
Which side of Sri Lanka is best in December?
The southwest coast is the better choice in December. Official seasonal guidance describes December to February as peak season there, with calmer seas. The east coast, including Trincomalee and Arugam Bay, gets northeast monsoon rain at this time of year.
Can you see whales in Sri Lanka in December?
Yes. December is the start of the main whale-watching season off Mirissa on the south coast. Sightings are never guaranteed, and boats only go out when sea conditions allow, so keep a spare morning in your plan.
Is Sri Lanka busy over Christmas and New Year?
Yes. The festive weeks are the busiest of the season on the south coast. Book beach hotels as soon as flights are fixed, and ask whether minimum stays or compulsory gala dinners apply on 24 and 31 December.
