A 14-day Sri Lanka itinerary can cover the island’s main regions at a calm pace. Spend three nights in the Cultural Triangle, two in Kandy and two in the hill country. Add one night near a safari park and four on the south coast. Between May and September, swap the south coast for the east.
How the two-week route fits together
The route runs as one loop, so you rarely drive the same road twice. It starts inland, climbs into tea country, drops to the southern plains and finishes on the coast.
| Base | Nights | Main reason to stay |
|---|---|---|
| Airport area or Negombo | 1 | Recover from the flight |
| Sigiriya or Habarana | 3 | Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa and an elephant safari |
| Kandy | 2 | Temple of the Tooth, botanical gardens, cultural show |
| Nuwara Eliya | 1 | Tea estates and a factory visit |
| Ella | 2 | Hill walks and the Nine Arch Bridge |
| Yala or Udawalawe area | 1 | Morning or afternoon jeep safari |
| South coast | 3–4 | Beaches, Galle Fort, whale watching in season |
Days 1–4: arrival and the Cultural Triangle
Arrive and rest
Stay near Bandaranaike International Airport or in Negombo. If you land in the morning, you can drive straight to Sigiriya and add a night on the coast later.
Drive to Sigiriya via Dambulla
Visit the Dambulla cave temple on the way. It is a UNESCO World Heritage property with painted caves above the road.
Sigiriya Rock and a village afternoon
Climb early and keep the afternoon light. Our Sigiriya climbing tips cover footwear, timing and fitness.
Polonnaruwa and an elephant safari
Cycle or drive around Polonnaruwa’s ruins in the morning. Join an afternoon jeep safari in Minneriya or Kaudulla, depending on where the elephants are gathering.
Days 5–9: Kandy and the hill country
Drive to Kandy
Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in the evening. Wear clothing that covers shoulders and knees.
Kandy at an easy pace
See the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya and walk around Kandy Lake. This is a good mid-trip rest day.
Tea country to Nuwara Eliya
Drive up through the tea estates, with a factory visit and a stop at St Clair’s or Devon Falls. Nights are cool here, so pack a warm layer.
Train to Ella
Take the hill-country train from Nanu Oya, the station for Nuwara Eliya, to Ella. Your driver moves the luggage by road. Reserve through Sri Lanka Railways online reservations.
Ella walks
Walk Little Adam’s Peak at sunrise, then visit the Nine Arch Bridge. Read our Nine Arch Bridge guide for timing and safe viewpoints.
Days 10–14: safari and the south coast
Descend to Yala or Udawalawe
Choose Udawalawe for a reliable elephant safari, or Yala for leopards and a wider mix of wildlife. Join an afternoon jeep safari after arriving.
South coast base
Stay in Mirissa, Tangalle or around Galle. Visit Galle Fort, and add whale watching from Mirissa in season. Our south-coast beach guide compares the main towns.
Return to the airport
The Southern Expressway makes the coast-to-airport drive manageable. For a very early flight, move the last night to Negombo.
National parks can close sections or change access seasonally. Check the Department of Wildlife Conservation or ask your operator before fixing your safari day.
How to adapt the route by season
Seasonal guidance checked 6 October 2026: the official Sri Lanka Tourism climate guide describes December to February as peak season on the southwest coast. It names May to September as the best time for the dry zone, including Trincomalee, Arugam Bay and Jaffna.
- December to April: run the route as written, ending on the south coast.
- May to September: after Kandy and the hills, head east instead. Spend the last four nights in Trincomalee or Pasikuda, or finish in Arugam Bay after Ella.
- October and November: showers are possible island-wide. Keep beach and boat days flexible, as our November guide explains.
What to change for families, couples or slower travellers
- Families with young children: drop Nuwara Eliya and take the train only part of the way. Add a second safari-area night so the jeep ride is not after a long drive.
- Couples: replace one Cultural Triangle night with an extra beach night, or add a hill-country boutique stay.
- Slower pace: cut Polonnaruwa or the safari rather than shortening every stop.
- More culture: add Anuradhapura, or continue north to Jaffna with our north Sri Lanka itinerary.

14-day itinerary questions
Is two weeks enough for Sri Lanka?
Two weeks is enough to see the Cultural Triangle, Kandy, the hill country, one safari park and a coastal stay without moving hotel every night. You will still need to leave out the north or east coast unless you travel in their season.
Should I choose Yala or Udawalawe on a 14-day trip?
Choose Udawalawe if seeing elephants matters most and you want a shorter detour. Choose Yala if you hope to see leopards and do not mind busier jeep tracks. Check park access with the Department of Wildlife Conservation before booking.
What is the best month for a 14-day Sri Lanka itinerary?
December to April suits this route, with the south coast in season at the end. From May to September, keep the inland stops and finish on the east coast instead. October and November need flexible beach and boat days.
Can I do a 14-day Sri Lanka trip with children?
Yes. Reduce the number of hotel changes, take only part of the train journey and add a night near the safari park. Share children’s ages and car-seat needs when you request a quote so the vehicle and pace fit.
